There’s no shortage of activities at Park. During my visit, I saw people enjoying picnics, playing frisbee, and walking their dogs. The walking trails are well-paved and provide a pleasant route for… Full review by Okawa_Kazue

Loved it. Monkeys free to roam and can be fed from inside a hut. Nice views. Lots of fun. The climb to get up the hill is tough (Aircon room at top to cool down) so if going in the summer don’t go be… Full review by Anna W

Iwatayama Monkey Park is on Mt Arashiyama, on the banks of the Ōi River, the same side as the Arashiyama train station, near the Hōrin-ji Temple. The entrance at the bottom of the hill is next to the… Full review by Dingo_dude

Hi , 04856 HHke these one of the place have to visit when you in Japan , the best train station is get off at Arashiyama Station , short walk to the gate and nice comfortable hike to the mountains , the monkeys in the park very friendly not like in China or Bali very wild , they also have the park house you can buy some foods for the monkey , do not look them directly in their eyes , respect them like your pet , give them some space , I have to tell you what happened to me when my last visit in Jan and very surprised there is one BIG monkey , soon as it saw me , keep following me around , when I sit down , it just sit so close to me and keep looking at me , what a Kodak moment ! you well come read my reviews on Tripadvisor about Japan , they all upgrade in Jan 2024 ! have fun ! hope you can meet my monkey friend there !

The town and river is right below the monkey park. You could easily have a meal, enjoy a coffee or tea, walk along the riverside, shop, sit on a bench and people watch or even rent a boat.... The incline is quite steep and in warmer weather it is killer! Even the kids were out of sorts in the dead of summer doing it. We returned this Fall and they were commenting that they can't believe they did the climb in the humidity of July!

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone can confirm that the monkey park itself (walking up to see and feed the monekys) is open right now? On the website there is a bright yellow banner saying "due to shortage of staff all excursions are temporarily suspended" and it no longer shows the price to enter the park. I am planning on going next week and dont want to hike all the way over there and then not be able to get in. Thanks!

It's open. We were there 2 days ago

Hi, I am planning to travel to Kyoto for two half days in a couple of weeks time with my family including two children 8 & 10. We were looking to go to Nagano separately but currently thinking Iwatayama may be a better option and therefore give us an extra day during our stay in Tokyo (or have a day trip elsewhere from there). What I am wondering is on one of the half days we were going to spend in Kyoto we were going to go to the Bamboo Forest. From what I have read about 20 - 30 minutes here is probably enough. I was thinking we may be able to walk out the South end of the Forest and across the bridge and then up the hill hike to the monkey park. When I look on Google Maps it appears to indicate a long trek of approx 6km (heading far south of the park and then looping back. Is this really the way you get there or is google maps not aware of the trail. If the walking path from the bamboo forest is shorter could someone advise approx distance and the timeframe it would take to walk. Appreciate any feedback

It took us perhaps half an hour to get up to the Iwatayama monkey park from the bus stop, taking it very slowly. We went in early May so I'm guessing you'll be taking it even slower, but it wasn't very far, just steep. It seemed that most people were going in and out of the bamboo forest (we didn't go) from the other side of the river, so I guess that would add quite a bit of distance unless there's a back way in. We spent about half an hour with the monkeys, there weren't that many (compared with the ones near Nagano), but they were cute - lots of babies.
