Jammu district is an administrative district of the Jammu division of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in the disputed Kashmir region. It is the most populous district in the Jammu division. According to the 2011 census Jammu district has a population of 1,526,406, roughly equal to the nation of Gabon or the US state of Hawaii. This gives it a ranking of 326th in India. The district has a population density of 596 inhabitants per square kilometre. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 12.48%. Jammu has a sex ratio of 871 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 83.98%. The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes account for 24.7% and 4.5% of the population of the district.
