The death of Miguel Uribe, two months after the attack against him, marks a return to the worst period of political violence in Colombia.

The 39-year-old conservative senator, a grandson of former president Julio Cesar Turbay (1978-1982), was shot in the head and leg on June 7 at a rally in the capital Bogota. Despite signs of progress in recent weeks, his doctors on Saturday announced he had suffered a new brain hemorrhage.

Miguel Uribe, who died on Monday, was from a prominent Colombian political family for whom the turbulence of the country's recent decades twice became personal tragedy. Uribe had been vying for his party's candidacy in upcoming presidential elections but died two months after being shot in the head at a campaign rally.
