At least 10 people are dead and many more injured as several fires broke out across Southern California amid historically dry and windy conditions.

At least 10 people have died across the Los Angeles area in the wildfires. Officials have said the true death toll is not known as the fires continue to burn.

Pope Francis is praying for victims and rescuers trying to control the wildfires in California that have killed at least 11 people and destroyed thousands of homes, the Vatican said on Saturday.

When the air is warm and dry, transpiration and evaporation also suck water out of the plants and soil. That leaves dry vegetation that can provide fuel for flying embers to spread wildfires, as the Los Angeles area saw in early January.

Trump has said he would turn on “a very large faucet” that could send millions of gallons of water from the Columbia River to Los Angeles.

After President-elect Donald Trump blamed Gov. Gavin Newsom for the Los Angeles County wildfires, the California leader invited the incoming president to travel to the state to meet with victims and survey the damage.
