WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Justice Department said on Thursday that it has filed a lawsuit challenging a New York state law that blocks immigration officials from arresting individuals at or near New York courthouses.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a federal lawsuit hoping to invalidate blue state New York's Protect Our Courts Act, which prevents civil immigration arrests in and around state courthouses. The bill's sponsor said the legislation stands on solid legal ground because it doesn't apply to federal courts.
