Sudan's army said on Saturday it had entered the central city of Wad Madani and was pushing out its paramilitary rivals the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a step which if completed successfully would be its biggest gain in nearly two years of war.

Sudanese officials says the military and its allies had taken back the strategic city of Wad Medani more than a year after the Rapid Support Forces seized it.

Sudan’s military on Saturday announced that its forces, along with allied armed groups, have entered the city of Wad Madani and are working to expel the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group from the city in Gezira state,

The Sudanese army said it and allied armed groups captured the key Rapid Support Forces (RSF)-held capital of Gezira state. A video the army shared on Saturday showed fighters claiming to be inside Wad Madani, while an army source told AFP they had "stormed the city's eastern entrance".

The RSF, however, still controls large parts of Al Jazirah state, except for Wad Madani city, Al-Manaqil, and its surrounding regions, extending south to Sennar State’s border and westward to the White Nile State’s boundary.

The Sudanese military and allied armed groups "liberated Al-Jazira state capital Wad Madani" on Saturday, the office of army-allied government spokesman and Information Minister Khalid al-Aiser said in a statement.

The recapture of the Sudanese city of Wad Medani came more than a year after it fell to the RSF. Just days earlier, the Biden administration accused the rebels of genocide.

The Sudanese armed forces said on Saturday its troops had entered Wad Medani, the capital of Al Gezira state south of Khartoum, more than a year after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces captured the key city.
