St. Cloud State graduate Vance Boelter appeared in federal court Monday afternoon. He is assigned a public defender, citing financial woes.

The man accused of shooting Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses has ties to Wisconsin that date back decades. FOX6 News found Vance Boelter has connections from western to southeast Wisconsin. Boelter is being held without bail on federal stalking and murder charges. He also faces state murder charges.

After a 43-hour search, Vance Boelter was arrested in rural Sibley County and charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Boelter was arrested in a field located in a rural part of Sibley County, in southwest Minneapolis, and he was being interviewed at a law enforcement facility, Drew Evans, the superintendent of the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said.

Eric Rudolph hid in the North Carolina wilderness for years after he bombed Centennial Olympic Park, a gay nightclub, and two abortion clinics; Boelter lasted a mere weekend. Yet both men belong to the same lineage.

Boelter built a scattered career ranging from food to retailing to private security to pastoring, public records and his online postings show.
