A second winter storm in as many days is slamming parts of the Midwest before rolling toward the East Coast. Major travel disruptions are likely.

A snowstorm has blown into the mid-Atlantic states, causing dozens of accidents on icy roads, prompting school closures and stoking worries about possible power outages.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Even as a lake effect snowstorm is closing highways today in Upstate New York, another storm system is barreling toward the region this weekend. The weekend “will feature very active winter weather as a large, powerful storm system passes through the region,” the National Weather Service said.

Snow will accumulate several inches in central and southern Maine before changing to sleet and freezing rain. In the mountains and far north, mostly snow will fall.
