Ten days after what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s 96 birthday, around 250 people gathered at Boston University for an event meant to highlight the lesser-known aspects of King’s legacy.

As Martin Luther King Jr. Day lands on Inauguration Day this year, Boston area organizations and leaders are planning a slew of activities to mark the holiday. The day will kick off at the Omni Seaport Hotel in Boston with the 55th Annual Martin Luther King Jr.

Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1962 speech, a Boston University event will explore "The Darkness at Midnight" during its annual MLK Jr. celebration.

Monday, Jan. 20 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a celebration and honoring of the work done by the famed civil rights leader. Organizations around Boston are offering free museum admission, family-friendly activities and live performances for the occasion.

The holiday falls on the third Monday of January. A bill to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a federal holiday was introduced on April 8, 1968 — four days after King was assassinated, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
