Shelves at the Walmart in Hayden were wiped out entirely Friday as supply chains grapple with a nationwide avian influenza outbreak.

The WinCo Foods at 8200 W. Fairview Ave. in Boise taped a sign to the doors of its refrigerators indicating that its egg suppliers have been affected by outbreaks of the highly pathogenic avian influenza, leading prices to go up for the remaining stock.

Egg prices at Bellingham stores in December ranged from $2.47 to $5.29 per dozen. By Jan. 2, the same brands ranged from $3.49 to $6.99. The egg shortage and price increase is blamed on a recent bird flu outbreak, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
