President Donald Trump has promised swift action on immigration, asylum and border security as he takes office today.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday signed executive orders declaring illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border a national emergency, designating criminal cartels as terrorist organizations, and targeting automatic citizenship for U.

“Today, I will sign a series of historic executive orders. With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America, and the revolution of common sense,” said Trump, who at midday Monday became only the second U.S. president to serve nonconsecutive terms, after Grover Cleveland in the late 1800s.

WASHINGTON - Newly sworn-in U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would declare illegal immigration a national emergency, send troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, and reinstate his "remain in Mexico" policy as part of a sweeping immigration crackdown.

It’s unclear how Trump would end automatic citizenship for everyone born in the country. Other orders are expected to be immediately challenged in the courts.
