PEOPLE can confirm that Smokey Robinson is facing a sexual assault investigation after four former housekeepers for the star sued him on May 6 for $50 million.

In a statement provided to USA TODAY on May 7, Robinson's attorney Christopher Frost said he will ask the Los Angeles County Superior Court to dismiss a complaint from four women accusing the singer, 85, of sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, gender violence and creating a hostile work environment.

A criminal investigation has been launched into the sexual assault allegations against legendary singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson, his attorneys and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirm to Variety.
