Well, that was fast. New Line Cinema’s anime feature The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which opened on Dec. 13 to a very low $4.5M, will be available on digital in home on Dec. 27, repping a 14-day theatrical window.

It started, of course, with J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy books, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Adaptations followed over the years, first on radio, then in animation, before Peter Jackson finally brought the realm of Middle-earth to a worldwide audience with his acclaimed LOTR trilogy.

The War of the Rohirrim takes place about 250 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings, during the reign of Helm Hammerhand, king of Rohan. Or, to give you another kind of perspective on things: Helm’s Deep, the massive mountain fortress where the climax of Peter Jackson’s The Two Towers takes place? That’s named after Helm.

The War of the Rohirrim is the latest entry into an ever-expanding world of Lord of the Rings adaptations, offering something truly unique.
