Flames continued to spew early Friday morning in the community of Moss Landing and the Elkhorn Slough area in northern Monterey County after a major fire at a battery storage plant that brought evacuations.

The dramatic fire at the the Vistra battery storage plant, one of the world’s largest, caused the evacuation of 1,200 people in Northern Monterey County, closed Highway 1 and sent large clouds of toxic black smoke billowing from at one of the world’s largest battery storage plants.

Authorities are battling to contain a fire at a battery facility next to the Moss Landing Power Plant in California.

A local state of emergency was declared on Friday, and the county board of supervisors will look to ratify it at a special meeting on Tuesday.

Our citizens are very alarmed,” one Morro Bay resident said, after the fire along Monterey Bay forced 1,200 people to evacuate.

A fire has been confirmed at the Vistra Power Plant in Moss Landing on Thursday which is forcing evacuations and closing roads in the area.

The fire started at the Vistra Energy battery plant in Moss Landing, roughly 80 miles south of San Francisco. On Thursday, the fire caused 1,700 people to evacuate, closed part of Highway 1, and generated huge flames and significant amounts of smoke. The cause is under investigation.
