Virginia B. Wood, the Chronicle’s food editor from 1997- 2014, died today in a San Antonio care facility. Wood’s close friend Pamela Nevarez-Fisher posted the news to Facebook this afternoon.

But after a very slow start, it turned into a gem, with Virginia and Texas Tech trading punches — and then in the final minutes of regulation and right into overtime, giant haymakers.
