The president has ordered the Pentagon to use the armed forces to carry out what in the past was considered law enforcement.

Options under discussion are focused on special forces operations, intelligence support and precision targeting, a senior U.S. official said.

The Pentagon has been deliberating since early this year about naval and drone strikes against Mexican cartels. But U.S. boots on the ground are not being considered, officials say.
