HOUSTON — Boston right-hander Hunter Dobbins had surgery to repair a torn right ACL on Tuesday. Dobbins was injured July 11 after landing awkwardly when making a play while covering first base. The 25-year-old Dobbins was 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA in 13 games with 11 starts this season in his first year in the majors.
PITCHING PROBABLES: Marlins: Janson Junk (6-2, 4.06 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 52 strikeouts); Red Sox: Garrett Crochet (13-5, 2.48 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 188 strikeouts)
Hunter Dobbins made his major league debut Sunday for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Two days later, the 25-year-old was still on Cloud Nine back in Worcester.
Dobbins is the first Red Sox rookie to do so against the Yankees since Scott Taylor in relief on Oct. 3, 1992, and Dana Kiecker as a starter on Sept. 21, 1990. And on a mere 82 pitches.
BOTTOM LINE: The Boston Red Sox host the Miami Marlins on Friday to open a three-game series. Boston has a 66-56 record overall and a 39-22 record at home. The Red Sox rank 10th in MLB play with 149 total home runs, averaging 1.2 per game.
Hunter Dobbins will face the Yankees for the second time in Game 2 as they face off at Fenway Park. As for Dobbins’ dad being with the Yankees, there’s been no evidence of his claim.
The 2025 Red Sox Media Guide does mention him on Hunter Dobbins’ biography page, but says only that Lance “pitched for 2 seasons (1996-97) in the Diamondbacks organization.”
