Meet Bo, a brush-tailed bettong at Cub Creek Science Camp. Native to Australia, brush-tailed bettongs formerly ranged across much of the Australian mainland south of the tropics, inhabiting desert grasslands and forests. Today, they live only in forests, woodlands, and eucalyptus scrublands. This nocturnal species spends the daytime resting in nests made of grasses and bark, emerging to forage between dusk and dawn. Bettongs feed primarily on fungus, occasionally mixing in bulbs, seeds, insects,

The male (the smaller of the two) is following the female around like persistent paparazzi. Females make it clear when they’re not interested—through squeaks, clicks, and other protest noises. Gestation is just 3 weeks, then the tiny joey climbs into the pouch. Even with a joey in tow, females can be ready for anoth

Woylies ( the traditional Nyoongar name) or Brush tailed bettong once inhabited more than 60% of mainland Australia, ranging from Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Over the past 150 years, it has been completely exterminated (got rid of) from almost all its historical range. Now, they can only be found in small pockets in Western Australia and offshore islands in South Australia. The woylie was once abundant throughout Perth, but due to predati

Watch as a Woylie (Brush-tailed Bettong) uses our AI-powered ‘SmartGate’ to safely travel between feral predator-proof areas... Designed and built by our in-house team of IT experts, the SmartGate acts as a double-gated enclosed tunnel that allows native species to move from one side of a fence to the other. A prototype of the cutting-edge tech is currently in trial on our Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary, on Noongar Country, in Western Australia. Learn how it works 👉 bit.ly/AWC-AI-SmartGate #AWC #

Mallee the Brush-tailed Bettong is thriving back in the safety of Mallee Cliffs National Park (NSW) where AWC works in partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service 🙏 The sub-adult was found by AWC ecologists weighing a minute 143g in September 2022 and taken to Taronga Western Plains Zoo Wildlife Hospital to be hand-reared by an experienced veterinary nurse. She returned to Mallee Cliffs in March this year. The team caught Mallee during recent surveys, approximately 3km from her rel

There’s been a breakthrough for the brush-tailed bettong. The marsupials were once all over the mainland, until foxes and cats left them all but locally extinct. Over the past 2 years conservationists have released 120 of the animals in South Australia and as Derek Sandow reveals, progress is looking promising. www.7NEWS.com.au #7NEWS #TheLatest | 7NEWS Australia

#CaughtOnCamera: Woylie contractor! This Woylie (Brush-tailed Bettong) was spotted on one of our remote cameras at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary (WA) collecting and carrying nesting materials. 🍂🍃 They use their prehensile tail to curl around bundles of sticks, grasses, leaves, and shredded bark, which they use to build a dome-shaped nest in a shallow scrape under a bush. Being a nocturnal species, they use these nests to rest during the day. 😴 Learn more about Woylies in our species profile 👉
