This week we said goodbye to one of our oldest satellites. After almost 29 years in space, our second European Remote Sensing, ERS-2, reentered Earth's atmosphere over the North Pacific Ocean. The satellite returned at 18:17 CET (17:17 UTC) between Alaska and Hawaii. Thank you for your service, ERS-2. 🔗 https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Videos/2024/02/ESA_satellite_returns_to_Earth_ERS-2_reentry | ESA - European Space Agency

Your camera sees sunsets. Our satellites see so much more. 🛰️ 19 August is World Photography Day! But here’s the twist: Earth Observation satellites don’t actually “take pictures” like your phone or DSLR. Instead, they capture streams of light reflected from Earth using specialised sensors. That’s why a satellite “photo” isn’t just a picture. It’s data. Data that tells us about crops, climate, forests, fires, ice, oceans — and so much more. So today, while we celebrate photography, remember: so

Estrack: tracking satellites at the speed of light ✨ Today, we expanded our deep space communication capabilities with the construction of a new 35-metre deep space antenna – the fourth of its kind. It will be joining the existing one at New Norcia station, Australia, to help meet our fast increasing data download needs. Estrack, keeps an eye on satellites no matter their location: tracking them across Earth orbit, voyaging to comets or asteroids and deep into our Solar System. It even keeps tab

Earth’s about to get a new CREAM🧴 With 11 000 satellites and over a million debris pieces crowding Earth orbit, the risk of crashes is growing fast. That’s why we’re testing CREAM — the Collision Risk Estimation and Automated Mitigation project. Instead of operators juggling endless alerts, CREAM can: -️ Spot risks -️ Propose avoidance manoeuvres -️ Even help satellites “negotiate” with each other From ground tests to an upcoming in-orbit demo, CREAM is designed to keep our skies safe and space

ISRO successfully launched the PSLV-C59 rocket carrying ESA's PROBA-3 satellites today, December 5, 2024, at 4:04 PM IST from Sriharikota. The mission, a collaboration with ESA and NewSpace India Ltd. (NSIL), aims to deploy the twin PROBA-3 satellites into a highly elliptical orbit over 60,000 kilometers from Earth. This is ESA's first satellite launch with ISRO in 23 years, following the Proba-1 mission in 2001. PROBA-3 features two satellites, the Occulter and the Coronagraph, designed to stud

ESA - European Space Agency on Instagram: "Ocean views from space | Meet the experts 👨💻 Earth observation satellites are guardians of our planet. Thanks to remote sensing technology and daily data collection, researchers are able to better monitor our planet's oceans and rising sea levels from space. Our senior advisor for @esa_earth programmes, Jérôme Beneviste, explains how ocean views from space play a role in climate change studies and natural catastrophe predictions. Learn more: https://
