How's this for a bedroom view? Looking out from the Castlebay Hotel in Barra towards Kisimul Castle at sunset. Built in the mid-1400s by the MacNeils, this was their base for around 400 years! Barra is such a beautiful island and although not everything is open in March, that just means it's extra peaceful. The beaches aren't bothered about opening hours anyway! What an adventure this was! Did you know that the Isle of Barra in Scotland's Outer Hebrides has the only airport with scheduled flights in the world that uses a beach runway? At high tide, it's entirely flooded by the sea, but they managed to squeeze in a morning and afternoon landing while the tide is out. One of my favourite spots on the Isle of Barra is Cille Bharra, a chapel dedicated to St Barr - the man who gave the island his name (although we don't know for sure who he was!) It's just a short distance from the airport where you can land on the beach like I did in March (if you have the stomach/bravery for the tiny plane...)
