An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 has struck western Japan on Tuesday, followed by a series of aftershocks. Surveillance footage shows shaking at Tottori, Yonago and Miyoshi city across the Chugoku region when the quake hit just before 10:30am local time. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the epicentre was in eastern Shimane Prefecture and there is no concern for a tsunami. West Japan Railway said it had suspended Shinkansen bullet-train operations between Shin-Osaka and Hakat

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck Japan’s western Chugoku region on Tuesday (Jan 6), the country’s meteorological agency said. No tsunami alerts were issued and there were no immediate reports of major damage. The same region was hit soon afterwards by smaller quakes measuring magnitudes of 4.5, 5.1, 3.8 and 5.4.
